Today was one of those days at Napatree Point when the air feels crisp enough to sharpen your senses and soften your soul at the same time. I got there early—very early—because my annual quest has begun anew: the pursuit of the snowy owl. This magnificent Arctic traveler has eluded me so far this season, and like any respectable photographer with more patience than sense, I picked a spot with a commanding view of the shoreline, the dunes, and the grassy flats where she might hunt.
From that moment on, it became a waiting game.
People speak about snowy owls in whispers—like they’re discussing state secrets. And for good reason. One careless mention, one too-loud “She’s here!” and suddenly there’s a stampede of well-meaning humans unintentionally stressing a bird who has already endured a journey worthy of myth. So I stood quietly, scanning, listening, hoping… and after two hours, the owl had not yet blessed me with her presence.
But nature, as she often does, delivered something else.
Enter the common house finch—an underdog in the glamour department, unlikely to land anyone on the cover of Audubon, but full of charisma if you’re paying attention. A small charm of them settled on the top of a cedar, and instantly my photographer’s brain translated their positions into something whimsical:
They were arranged like notes on a musical staff.
That was my very first impression—five little notes perched on nature’s treble clef. The morning light sculpted them into near-3D relief, each bird glowing with a warmth that defied the December chill. The bokeh behind them dissolved into a dreamy blend of amber grasses and soft coastal blues, like the background wash of a watercolor.
No snowy owl today.
But a symphony, nonetheless.
Sometimes the most “common” birds deliver the most uncommon beauty.
And sometimes nature writes the music—we’re just lucky enough to listen.
