So there I am, bright and bushy-tailed at the crack of dawn this morning—like some caffeine-deprived David Attenborough—tiptoeing through dew-soaked grass to photograph a Mute Swan on her nest, because apparently that’s who I am now.

Cue dramatic music: Enter The Osprey.

This majestic raptor comes soaring overhead in the distance like it’s auditioning for National Geographic, but something about its catch just isn’t right. It’s carrying… something. And it’s not flopping or oriented like a fish. It’s suspiciously rigid. I zoom in. I squint. I tilt my head like a confused dog. Nope—no clue.

Then, in true cinematic fashion, the osprey glides to the water’s edge at Narragansett Beach and drops its mystery prize on the beach like it’s tossing out trash. Instantly, the local gang of gulls—clearly fueled by caffeine and chaos—swarm the drop like it’s Black Friday.

Now, I’m dying of curiosity. I have never seen anything like this! I have to know what this raptor just delivered like a feathery Uber Eats. I pack up two cameras and tripods like I just found out I won the lottery. I make my way over, heart pounding, camera ready… and there it is.

Un. Be. Lievable.

It’s a dog’s throw toy…I think.
