White-throated Sparrow

I never set out to become a bird photographer. In fact, if you’d asked me years ago, I might’ve laughed and said something like, “Photographing little birds? That’s for the birds.”

Turns out, I was right. And wonderfully wrong.

What started as a simple curiosity—just a walk in nature with a camera slung over my shoulder—quickly turned into an obsession that’s tested my patience, my equipment, and occasionally, my dignity. These feathered rockets of color have a knack for making seasoned photographers feel like clumsy tourists.

Take the White-throated Sparrow, for example. A lovely little songbird with a crisp white bib, yellow lores, and a stare that could humble you. I spotted one recently and thought, Alright, let’s dance. He hopped from branch to branch, zigzagging through a natural obstacle course of limbs and shadows. I moved in. He moved out. Four times.

Every time he landed, I fired off a burst of shots. Click-click-click. Multiply that by four tree landings, and I had a hundred photos in the can. Surely one of them, I thought, please just one, would be in focus, unobstructed, and decently lit.

And wouldn’t you know it? There it was. That one perfect image. Sharp eye, soft light, clean background—magic.

But here’s the truth: even if that perfect shot hadn’t been there, I’d still be smiling. Because every part of the process—the anticipation, the quiet breath before clicking the shutter, the rush of downloading, and the suspense of reviewing—brings me joy. It’s a pursuit wrapped in patience, luck, and just enough skill to keep you coming back for more.

Birds don’t pose. They don’t wait. They challenge you to meet them where they are—on their terms. And when you do, when it all comes together for just one frame, it feels like a gift.

So yes, photographing little birds is for the birds. And thank goodness I’m one of them now.
