Sadie and Sophie

It’s Christmas 2025, and it felt like a good day—no, the right day—for a Joy-themed post. When I think of creatures genetically wired for joy, two leap immediately to mind: dolphins and dogs.

Now, given that I live in Narragansett, Rhode Island, dolphin photography in December would require either divine intervention or a very convincing wetsuit. Dogs, on the other hand, are readily available. Plentiful, even. Especially in my office.

As I write this, I glance over at my leather chair. Occupied. By Sadie and Sophie. Both are staring at me with that unmistakable look—part devotion, part surveillance. I’m convinced dogs possess a sixth sense that detects adoration… or at least mild self-recognition. Either way, I’ve been made.

When we brought them home—mother and child, no less—we had no idea how much joy would come padding into our lives on four legs. We’ve always been a one-dog household. Always. And now Trish casually mentions that when I’m not around, she might get a third dog.

I’m standing there thinking, My God, she’s already making contingency plans. And by contingency plans, I mean… well… you know. Somehow, it’s not as comforting as she thinks it is.

Back to the dogs.

These two require exactly one thing to be happy.

Us.

As in Trish and George. Full stop.

Every time we walk through the door, they climb over one another like it’s a competitive sport—Who Can Love Them Faster. Some might call it needy. I call it pure, unfiltered devotion. No conditions. No fine print. Just joy, served enthusiastically and often with fur.

If there were an international ambassador for joy, Sadie and Sophie would be grossly overqualified. They spread it shamelessly, generously, and without regard for personal space.

So consider this joy sent—from our house to yours.

Christmas has a way of reminding us what matters most: family, connection, generosity, hope… and occasionally a dog staring at you while you work, reminding you that you are loved beyond reason.

May your days be joyful.
Especially the ones that end with a “Y.”
