"King of The World" Great Black-backed Gull

Sometimes nature borrows a line straight from the movies.

I walked up on this Great Black-backed Gull standing atop a piling, chest out, chin up, surveying his kingdom, and immediately heard Jack Dawson bellowing from the bow of the Titanic: “I’m king of the world!”

Now, I’m fairly certain this gull has never seen the movie.
No popcorn. No Leonardo DiCaprio. No tragic ending.

But I also know this: he didn’t just happen to land there.

That piling isn’t a coincidence—it’s a strategy.

From that height he has a commanding view of everything that matters. Fish near the surface. Boats stirring things up. Other birds foolish enough to catch something worth stealing. Tides, wind, movement—information flows downhill, and he’s at the top of it.

And let’s be honest—this is the largest gull species on the planet. Standing tall reinforces exactly what he already knows. This is his airspace. His shoreline. His moment. Other birds don’t argue. They’ve learned better.

There’s safety up there, too. No foxes. No surprise encounters. Just a clean launch if things go sideways. A single lean into the wind and he’s airborne—no wasted energy, no drama. Seabirds are masters of efficiency.

The wind helps as well. It cools him, dries his feathers, steadies his balance. Nature’s version of climate control—exclusive seating.

And then there’s the piracy. Because Great Black-backed Gulls are nothing if not opportunists. From above, he can watch another bird work hard for a meal… and then decide that effort is overrated. Timing is everything, and height gives him the advantage.

So yes—he looks like he’s posing for the camera.
Yes—he looks absurdly confident.
Yes—he looks like he might break into a victory speech.

But what you’re really seeing is a lookout tower, a throne, a safe haven, a launch pad, and an air-conditioned lounge rolled into one.

This image captured a moment of pure avian confidence.

And I’m just having a little fun watching him enjoy it.
