Perhaps it’s the single-digit cold—windchill factored—plunging Narragansett, RI, into a climate normally reserved for Pluto. Or maybe it’s the recent vertigo flirtation atop One World Trade Center. Or (and let’s be honest here) maybe there’s nothing quite like remembering having fun when it was warm to distract from frostbite fantasies. Either way, my photo review detoured straight to Amsterdam and the A’DAM LOOKOUT and Europe’s highest rooftop swing, “Over The Edge”— the swing that politely asks, “Would you like to leave the building?”

Perched across the IJ River from Central Station, A’DAM LOOKOUT is a 360° observation deck that delivers the city in surround sound. Historic center? Check. Boats threading the IJ below? Check. Harbor to the west, IJsselmeer to the east, pancake-flat countryside to the north? Check, check, check. And those big XXX marks crowning the tower? That’s Amsterdam saying hello with its three St. Andrew’s Crosses—city-wide swagger, not a warning label (though it feels like one when you’re about to swing).

The tower itself is a glow-up story: former Shell office high-rise turned creative playground. You rocket up in an immersive elevator, step into an indoor 360° deck with interactive exhibits and a scale model of Amsterdam (tiny canals, zero tourists), grab a drink, then wander outside to the sky deck. Glass floors? Sure. Wide platforms? Absolutely. And then… the swing.

“Over The Edge” doesn’t dangle politely. It pushes. You sit in a harnessed seat and get swung out past the building’s edge, nearly 100 meters above ground, where gravity clears its throat and says, “We need to talk.” It’s equal parts thrill, laughter, and involuntary life review.

Enter our friends, Jen and Liz—brave? Yes. Adventurous? Unquestionably. Sensible? Let’s not overreach. They were there before us, on a separate trip, happily launching themselves into thin air while sending back photos that can only be described as evidence. By the time Trish and I arrived later, I already knew how this movie ended—and spoiler alert, I’m not the hero. They strapped in. They leaned out. They came back laughing, hair wind-whipped, adrenaline-soaked. Trish and I took a hard “pass”.

Below the deck sits the Madam Sky Bar and nightclub, plus offices, restaurants, and a boutique hotel—proof that Amsterdam-Noord’s industrial past has been joyfully redeployed into a creative hotspot with excellent views and questionable decisions (the good kind).

Key facts (for the planners and the skeptics):

  • Location: Overhoeksplein 5, Amsterdam-Noord
  • Height: Observation deck ~100 m (including spire)
  • Opened: 2016 as a public viewpoint
  • Signature attraction: “Over The Edge” rooftop swing

So if you’re a thrill-seeker sitting at home wondering what there is to do in Amsterdam for excitement, look no further.

Your chariot awaits.
Just don’t forget to strap in.

One response to “A’DAM LOOKOUT — and the “Over The Edge” experience”

  1. Going to Amsterdam in November. Great info. Not sure about if I have the courage to attempt that swing though. Yikes.
