"Joy, Unscripted" Spontaneous Song

We spend a lot of time following directions.

Stand here.
Walk there.
Keep your voice down.
Don’t make a scene.

Somewhere along the way, we all quietly agree to stay within the lines.

Not because we have to…
But because it’s easier.

Predictable.

Safe.

And then… there are people who didn’t get that memo.

Trish and I were in Belgium.
Spring. One of those rare warm days that feels like it showed up early just to see who would notice.

We were walking—no destination, no urgency—just taking it in.

And then I saw them.

A group of young women.

Laughing. Talking.
The kind of laughter that doesn’t check to see who’s listening.

There was something about them that stood out immediately.

Not loud.
Not disruptive.

Just… uncontained.

I slowed down.

Photographer instinct.

You don’t always know why a moment matters—
you just feel it before you understand it.

I thought about asking to take their picture.

That’s the “right” way.

Polite. Respectful.
Follow the rules.

And then they did something that made all of that irrelevant.

They broke into song.

Just like that.

No cue.
No choreography.
No audience required.

A melody rose out of nowhere and filled the space between them—
and suddenly, the street felt different.

Lighter.

Warmer.

Alive in a way that had nothing to do with the weather.

People passed by.

Some smiled.
Some pretended not to notice.

You could almost see the divide:

Those who live inside the lines…
and those who remember what it feels like to step outside them.

There was no performance in it.

No phones out.
No staging.
No second take.

Just a moment that existed because they allowed it to.

Click.

And that’s the thing.

We say we value joy.
We say we admire freedom.

But most of the time, we keep both on a short leash.

Measured. Managed. Appropriate.

Until someone reminds us…

It doesn’t have to be.

Those women didn’t ask for permission.
They didn’t wait for the right time.
They didn’t check to see if it made sense.

They just… sang.

And for a brief moment,
in the middle of an ordinary street,
on an ordinary day—

Life stopped following directions.

And became something better.
