“Spanlight Reflections” Newport Bridge, Rhode Island

I was heading out for a wildlife hike but couldn’t resist swinging by the cove to grab a sunrise shot of the Newport Bridge. The setup was perfect—bridge in front, water below, and me with plenty of time before the sun came up.

The clouds were heavy, though. I told myself, “This is either going to be spectacular or an absolute bust.” Spoiler alert: it was a bust. By ten minutes after sunrise, the drama I was hoping for never showed up.

But here’s the funny thing. Like I always do, I took a few test shots—long exposures, just to dial everything in. Trish happened to stroll by and glanced at my monitor.

“Oh honey, that’s beautiful.”

“Really? Don’t you think it would be better with, you know, an actual sunrise—or stars—something besides clouds?”

“No, not at all. The clouds make the bridge stand out. It’s dramatic. I love it.”

So there you have it. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. This one’s for Trish and her critical eye. What do you think—was she right?

  1. The wife is always right! I too think the picture is beautiful. I like the how the colors of the sky and water are similar enough that the bridge is the highlight. Striking.
