October 5, 2025 — Two hours left of our first full day in Yellowstone National Park.

The American Bison—majestic, massive, and deceptively serene—rule the open plains with a calm that borders on hypnotic. You watch them move and think slow. You’d be wrong.

After leaving the bald eagle and the grizzly behind, we found ourselves overlooking Hayden Valley, where a large herd of bison was making its way through a gentle, winding stream. The water was too far away to hear, but through our telephoto lenses, we could see the rhythm of the crossing—the slow step, the ripple, the puff of mist from each exhale. Snow flurries drifted through the scene like falling ash, softening everything into a dream.

Upstream, a few bison gathered at a spot where the land ended abruptly—about a foot and a half above the water’s surface. We waited. Cameras ready. Breath held.

Then—Geronimo!

One enormous bison leapt, splashing down in a burst of white water and snow. Another followed, then another—each one defying its size with astonishing grace. I fired a short burst, heart racing as I watched those massive silhouettes suspended midair. When I checked the playback, I couldn’t help but grin. I got it.

Most people assume something that big can’t move fast—but bison can hit 35 to 45 miles per hour, faster than most horses, and they can jump six feet vertically from a standstill. And unlike horses, they’ve got horns—big ones. Let’s just say, if there’s a photo finish, you’d rather not be the one holding the ribbon.

Don and Adam’s rule echoed in my head: “When we say back in the van, move without hesitation.” We did. Every single time.

As the light faded, the herd lingered in the valley, still visible through the gentle snow. They didn’t disappear into the distance—we left them there, content and unmoved by our presence. The day wasn’t over, but it was ending in the best possible way: with the quiet thrill of knowing Yellowstone still had surprises waiting just beyond the next bend.
